My Priorities as Gallatin County Commissioner, District 1

I’m a working-class guy who rents in Bozeman because buying a home here has become nearly impossible for regular working people. I understand the struggles families face every day with skyrocketing housing costs, taxes, and regulations that make it harder to get ahead.

That’s why I’m running with a simple promise: common-sense, conservative values and ethics — guided by the Golden Rule. I believe government should treat people the way we want to be treated: with honesty, respect, and fairness.

My Top Commitments:

Integrity
Transparency
Affordability
Responsible Spending
Community Safety

About Dan Hill

Hi, I’m Daniel Hill, and I’m running for the office of Gallatin County Commissioner, District 1. I’m not a politician or professional public speaker. My reason for running is to listen to the people of the county and serve them with the same work ethic I’ve always had. I’m running because I work full time as a carpenter, raising my two daughters, and I rent, not being able to afford to buy a home here. Gallatin County and especially Bozeman have become unaffordable and elitist. It’s on track now for my kids to never play in their own backyard, have a dog or cat, or cook out or grow a garden. I’ve worked hard all my life and feel there should be more than just survival.

No, I’m not from here, but when I moved to this area in 1999, my goal of owning a home felt possible. Many working families have moved away just to own a home. My children were born here, and their mom’s ancestors came to Bozeman in 1903, living first at Chestnut, by Trail Creek, then ranching in Bridger Canyon. I feel like I should work to give them a chance to stay, live and work here if they choose too.

All citizens deserve to be heard and shown respect no matter what political party they are with or their background. The same principle I had when I served as a volunteer firefighter/EMT; I answered the call for help no matter who it was. In these times, I feel there is too much destructive hatred and division. Everyone has their firmly held convictions or religious beliefs, but that doesn’t have to divide us as Americans. I’m a conservative Republican, and try to follow Jesus Christ every day, but that doesn’t mean I can’t serve or work with people who are totally the opposite. Every service used, or by being served in this community, such as driving on a road, dining out, calling 911, being in school, or cared for by a nurse or doctor, it is likely by someone who believes differently than you. Let’s look past our differences to solve problems.

If elected, I will show up to listen and work every day; My priorities include; - Fixing the County finances and audit issue, working with the Commissioners and Treasurer to get it reconciled and current where it should be; - Being transparent about this and all my work as Commissioner; -  Trying to make living here more affordable, and working to lower property taxes; - Roll back excessive spending;- Eliminating the Commissioners’ ability to vote themselves a pay raise; -Support our Sherriff’s office with competitive pay to retain great officers; Support the volunteer fire/EMS agencies of the county, with sustainable funding so responders can be properly compensated.

I don’t claim to be an expert on these issues, but I’ll bring a lifetime of hard work and common sense to this job and our community. If these goals make sense or sound reasonable to you, I’d be honored to have your vote in November.
